River Valley School District Hosts National League of Innovative Schools Convening

On Thursday, March 27, River Valley School District proudly served as one of 13 Pittsburgh-area hosts for the League of Innovative Schools Spring 2025 Convening, bringing national attention to the district’s leadership in career-connected learning and workforce readiness.

The event at River Valley’s STEAM Academy welcomed educators, industry leaders, government officials, and higher education representatives. Representatives from schools across the country participated in collaborative discussions to strengthen the alignment between K-12 education and the demands of a rapidly evolving workforce.

  • Lisa Cubarney, Westinghouse

  • Dr. Michael Reed, Pennsylvania College of Technology

In addition, elementary students presented “The Career Compass: Finding Your True North,” demonstrating how the RIASEC framework is used to help young learners explore their strengths, interests, and potential career pathways through engaging, real-world applications.

The event concluded with guided tours of the STEAM Academy led by student ambassadors. Guests had the opportunity to interact with instructors and students, experience hands-on demonstrations, connect with post-secondary and industry partners, and explore the academy’s cutting-edge learning environments.

Guests also enjoyed a performance by the Indiana High School Jazz Band.

“Hosting this event demonstrates River Valley's dedication to educational innovation. We aim to ensure students graduate fully prepared for successful careers, with practical skills and valuable real-world experiences,” said Superintendent Philip Martell. “Today was a powerful showcase of what’s possible when education and industry come together.”
