River Valley School District Embarks on an Innovative Journey with Newly Created Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force

Superintendent Philip Martell proudly announces the establishment of the River Valley School District’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force.

This groundbreaking initiative will explore and harness the potential of AI technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and operations across the district.

River Valley School Board Curriculum Director Dr. Luke Faust and University of Pittsburgh Professor Michael Pry will lead the committee composed of teachers, administrators, and students.  The AI Task Force will be guided by the Artificial Intelligence Integration Framework, developed to address critical areas of AI integration, including leadership, policy, instructional practices, student engagement, and business operations.

"Establishing this Task Force marks a pivotal moment in our commitment to fostering innovation in education. AI has the potential to transform how we approach both instruction and operations, ultimately preparing our students for a future that is permeated by technology while ensuring that educators maintain their central role in shaping student success," said Superintendent Martell.

The AI Task Force will focus on several key priorities:

  • Leadership & Vision: Collaborating with district leaders to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for integrating AI, ensuring alignment with the district's strategic goals.
  • Policy, Ethical & Legal Considerations: Reviewing and establishing policies to safeguard student privacy and ensure ethical AI practices, focusing on closing educational equity gaps.
  • Instructional Framework: Supporting educators leveraging AI tools to create personalized learning experiences and innovative instructional strategies and practices.
  • Professional Learning: Providing educators professional development opportunities focused on AI tools and ethical considerations to enhance teaching.
  • Student Use: Empowering students to engage critically with AI technologies, fostering responsible use and understanding of AI’s societal impact.
  • Business & Technology Operations: Exploring AI-driven efficiencies in administrative and operational processes to streamline district functions.
  • Community Engagement: Engaging parents, guardians, staff, and community stakeholders through regular communication and feedback that will foster a collaborative approach to AI integration.

In today’s first Task Force meeting, the group explored the impact of AI on teaching and learning. The committee will meet regularly to analyze each focus area and provide the River Valley School District with comprehensive recommendations to guide the use of AI while maintaining a commitment to ethical practices and student privacy.

"This Task Force will shape the future of River Valley's educational landscape, ensuring that AI is implemented thoughtfully and equitably," added Martell. "Our goal is to elevate student learning outcomes and operational efficiency while upholding the values that make our district strong."
