Our Mission

The mission of the River Valley STEAM Academy is to prepare students to succeed in high-demand occupations within the competitive, 21st-century global economy. STEAM Academy students participate in Programs of Study mastering rigorous academic and relevant technical concepts that will guide them to successful career outcomes. This is accomplished by providing top-quality instruction, as well as promoting partnerships with business, industry, and the community within the students' chosen career pathway. These collective attributes will ultimately prepare students for their post-secondary journeys into the workforce.

Programs
 

Cybersecurity


This course is an introduction to a vital sector in security. Students will be introduced to the concepts of computer security and how it relates to other areas of information technology. Topics include security threats and management, hardening systems, wireless networking, securing networks, cryptography and organizational security policies.


The skills gained in this course may be applied across the cybersecurity industry under numerous job titles including Information Security Analyst, Penetration Tester, Data Recovery Professional, Network Security Engineer, Cryptographer, Security Awareness Training Specialist, and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), and many more.


eSports


The STEAM Academy’s eSports, or organized and competitive gaming, is a fast-growing industry. This course will immerse students in the eSports industry by playing, strategizing, and analyzing video games. Students will even create content to contribute to the video game community.


Whatever type of gamer you are, our eSports class can help build a sense of belonging, promote collaboration and communication skills, and foster good sportsmanship, while also creating a pipeline for future STEM careers and furthering students’ strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities. 


 

Electrical Occupations

 

This program of study is a solid introduction to the field of electricity. Students will receive instruction related to a broad range of workforce applications including residential, commercial, and industrial applications as well as the National Electric Code (NEC). Additional coursework will include information from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCEER) curriculum. 


This course introduces the concepts regarding electrical safety, tools, blueprint reading, residential cabling, switches, receptacles, and circuits.

 

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Therapy

 

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Therapy (SMaRT) is a solid introduction to the therapy profession. Students will receive instruction related to becoming an Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapist, Physical Therapy Assistant, Occupational Therapist, and Occupational Therapy Assistant.

 

According to data collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the demand for all portions of Therapists is likely to grow by an estimated 33%. Students can achieve CPS/First-Aid Certification for both children and adults. Other topics include Emergency Care and Infection Control; Injury Prevention; Nutrition and Hydration; Exercise Science; Human Development and Mental Health; Physiology; and Pathophysiology.
